Poor rainfall will lead to power shortage in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Nov 24, 2016 : It is reported that poor rainfall activity in the state is likely to affect electricity supply in Dakshina Kannada, especially Mangaluru taluk in upcoming summer. The current weather conditions points to a hot summer in 2017. Frequent power cuts in turn could affect agricultural and industrial activity in Mangaluru taluk. Currently, 10 to 60 minutes short duration power cuts are common.

Though Mangaluru taluk requires 230 mega watts electricity per day it has been receiving only 200 to 210 mega watts of electricity. To overcome the deficient supply shortage and to balance electricity requirement in the taluk , the authorities disconnect electricity for half an hour or 10 minutes on a daily basis. 

Last year, around 150-160 watts of electricity was required against the supply of 110 to 130 watts per day in the taluk. The demand for electricity has risen sharply this year with a jump in the number of industries in the taluk.

Mostly all industries in the region are functioning by using electricity. It is not possible for MESCOM to cut the supply of electricity frequently in the city. Therefore, the duration of power cut is higher in rural areas than in urban. Meanwhile, with many people opting for solar power in Mangaluru the demand for electricity has been reduced to some extent.

Power cuts may cause water shortage : Drinking water is being pumped by electric motors to Mangaluru City Corporation and Ullal municipality from Thumbe vented Dam. Long duration power cuts are likely to cause scarcity of water in Mangaluru, proper steps are urgently the need of the day.
