“We were getting a number of complaints about the problems being caused by plastic speed breakers. Hence, we have decided not to go for them unless they are absolutely required,” City Police Commissioner T.R. Suresh stated.

He said that while the MCC erects speed breakers on the recommendation of the traffic police, the latter too erect a few whenever required. But besides being a nuisance, plastic speed breakers were found to have a lower life span than the bitumen ones, particularly on roads witnessing heavy traffic movement, Mr. Suresh said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M. Manjunatha Shetty said the police were compelled to go for plastic speed breakers as people wanted immediate solutions to reduce vehicular speed on busy roads. The number of road accidents has drastically come down after the erection of plastic speed breakers, he claimed.

Yet, following public anger over the crude nature of such speed breakers, the traffic police have decided against their installation in future. As and when the existing ones wear out, the police will ask the MCC to erect bitumen speed breakers, as per standards specified by the Indian Road Congress, Mr. Shetty said.
