Patient records in Govt. hospitals to be on line and value added facilities soon

Mangalore, Oct 16, 2014   : Speaking to the media after an inspection of  the work on the new buildings of  district hospital in Mangalore on October 15,  Minister for Health and Family Welfare U TKhader has said that computerized archiving of medical records of patients will be taken up at all government hospitals and Primary Health Centers (PHCs) across the State.

The minister informed,  that the computerisation of medical reports would be beneficial in the treatment of patients.  The system will fecilitate a particular patient referred by a government hospital/ Primary Health Centre to another for advanced treatment, the doctor at the latter can access and study the case history of the patient in no time and study his background, the minister said. This will go a long way in helping the doctors to  understand the patients needs and help in correct diagnosis.

Mobile app :  UT Khader further said that a mobile app ‘Healthizen’ will be introduced, wherein the patients and general public can send their complaints about the department of health, directly. The facility will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister next week.   The application will be accessible in Android phones as well as Google, U T Khader said.

The minister further said that the public can send their complaints regarding the malfunctioning of equipment or the problems related to the management in hospitals and Primary Health Centres, along with the still photos or videos to himself directly or to the department officials, ‘Healthizen’ will make use of the GPS to identify the location of the hospitals, which will be complimentary in solving the problem, he said.  Khader said that the app has the credit of being the first of its kind in Asia. Union Minister for Health Harshavardhan has also shown interest in the project. In due course, the application will be provided to the central government by the State government, he said.

High risk ward  :  Minister UT Khader further said that a five bedded high risk ward will be opened in Lady Goschen Hospital, at a cost of Rs 10.46 crore, to deal with complications in maternity cases.  Highly qualified staff will be deployed at the unit.

IRCS blood component unit :   The Minister also said that former Union minister M Veerappa Moily will inaugurate the blood component separation equipment worth Rs 1 crore, donated by BPCL as a part of their corporate social responsibility, at Indian Red Cross Society Blood Bank in Government Lady Goschen hospital premises on October 18 at 4pm.  The blood bank is run by the Dakshina Kannada district unit of the Indian Red Cross Society.  At the same time, Health Minister U T Khader will inaugurate a 6-bedded Maternal and Child Health unit in the Lady Goschen hospital.

  New building with 6 floors  :   It was decided to construct a new building for the 163 years old hospital in September, 2012, and foundation stone for the same was laid on March 18, 2012 by the then Union Minister M Veerappa Moily. Shri Krishna Shelter, a Bangalore based company had availed the contract towards the construction of the building with 1,13,000 sq feet area. The new building will have six floors.   While the basement will be reserved for parking, the Out Patient Department (OPD) will be on the ground floor, administration office and private wards on first floor, wards on second floor, NICU in thrid floor, operation theatres on fourt floor and for further expansion on fifth floor.

Observation  reveals that Wenlock hospital  out patient is very efficient. With the streamlining and continuous monitoring and checking  there is minimal  waiting and hardly any ques.  Compared to several  private sector hospitals it is very good in many aspects and far cheaper. The public need to overcome the old prejudices against such hospitals and  try them out.
