Mangaluru, April 17, 2015 : The Public Works Department of the Karnataka Government has released a grant of Rs 6 crores for the construction of the Tannirbavi-Sultan Bathery Suspension Bridge.
This was informed by Mangaluru South MLA JR Lobo while addressing reporters here. “I wanted to revive the much awaited suspension bridge project, the fate of which was hanging fire for want of grants since the past few years,” he said. As per the plan the 410 meters long and !0 feet wide suspension bridge ought to have come up at a cost of Rs 12 crores , 25 feet above the sea level.
The project was initiated in 2006, and Rs one crore was released in 2008. Though the project commenced in 2012 it soon was suspended for want of funds.
MLA JR Lobo who strived to revive the project, on realising that the Tourism Department lacked funds ensured that the project was entrusted to PWD.
The PWD has now released Rs 6 crores for the project. The MLA has said the project works would resume soon and that another Rs 6 crores would be released in the second phase. He also stated that efforts would be made to complete the project within the next two years.
