PU education department to enquire into Aloysius College burqa controversy

Mangalore, April 30, 2012: The department of PU education stated that it will enquire into the ban placed by St. Aloysius Pre University College on wearing burqa in classrooms and exam halls.

St. Aloysius CollegeStating that she had no knowledge of such a ban, Rashmi V., the commissioner for PU education, said that the department will enquire into the matter if there is any truth in it. She said that she will request the deputy director of PU education to send a report and pursue the matter if the college has truly banned the burqa in classrooms and exam halls.

When she was told that the college had mentioned the burqa rule in its prospectus, stating that girls are not to wear the burqa in classrooms and exam halls, she said that colleges cannot publish their prospectus before the PU calendar of events is published. She stated that the calendar of events is issued only after the SSLC exam results are declared, adding that the PU calendar of events for 2012 – 13 ought to be published only during the first or second week of May.

Meanwhile, K. Marulasiddappa, the noted writer and thinker, voiced his opinion that the college is within its right to ban covering of the face in classrooms and exam halls. Stating that he feels that the college has not banned the burqa itself, but only the covering of the face in exam halls and classrooms, he said that he vehemently opposes any ban placed on the burqa itself.
