According to police, Abdul Tayyab, a resident of Mumbai, had befriended a girl from Puttur through social media for the past 18 months. He had come to Puttur and had invited the girl to his room in the lodge where he was staying.

Bajrang Dal activists learnt of the Muslim boy’s invitation to the girl visiting the lodge and informed the police.

The couple was asked to accompany the police to the police station and faced an inquiry in the presence of the girl’s parents. During the inquiry, it was revealed that Abdul had visited the lodge on June 2 and apparently sexually assaulted the girl. Even during his visit to Puttur on October 20, he had sexually assaulted the girl and had also issued a death threat to her.

Based on the complaint by the victim, the police have booked cases under IPC Section 376 and 506 as well as Section 8 of Pocso Act.
