PNB fraud: Gokulnath Shetty kept tabs on action taken against bankers on Facebook

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, Feb 20, 2018: Gokulnath Shetty, accused of being the key facilitator of the over Rs 11,300-crore fraud at PNB, had foregone promotions to stay at the bank’s Brady House branch.

gokulnath shet...But a glance at his Facebook page, which you cannot enter unless he accepts you as a friend, suggests that the retired executive kept tabs on disciplinary action against bankers — a group on the social networking site with nearly 12,000 members. Expectedly, some of the top feeds in the group relate to Shetty’s alleged misdemeanour with not a word of sympathy for him.

While many see the officer’s move to refuse promotions to be part of a conspiracy to help the kingpin diamantaire Nirav Modi, bankers say it is quite normal for many employees to refuse promotions just to stay in Mumbai or Delhi. It’s a different matter that the bank should have moved him to a different assignment every few months and he should have been moved out of the South Mumbai bank branch.

Shetty, according to his Facebook page, graduated from Mumbai’s Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics and may have opted to stay in the city. He had earlier studied at Vijaya College, Mulki, near Mangalore, which was his hometown.
