New Delhi, Aug 08, 2019: As Jammu and Kashmir entered day four of a complete lockdown, the Supreme Court on Thursday, 8 August, refused urgent hearing of ML Sharma’s plea against the abrogation of Article 370 in the state. The apex court also refused to urgently hear Tehseen Poonawalla’s petition, seeking lifting of the lockdown in the Valley.
PM Narendra Modi is likely to address the nation on Thursday, 8 August at 8 pm, during which he is expected to explain the reasoning behind his government’s decisions on abrogating special status to Jammu and Kashmir and splitting the state into two Union Territories, sources told PTI.

SC Refuses Early Hearing of Pleas Against Abrogation of Article 370
The Supreme Court on Thursday, 8 August, refused urgent hearing of ML Sharma’s plea against the abrogation of Article 370 in the state. The apex court also refused to urgently hear Tehseen Poonawalla’s petition seeking lifting of lockdown in the Valley. Division bench headed by Justice N V Ramana said the matter would be placed before Chief Justice of India for listing.
Petition in SC Against Govt’s Move to Impose Restrictions in Kashmir
Congress activist Tehseen Poonawalla has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking withdrawal of curfew, blocking of phone lines, internet, news channels and other restrictions from Jammu and Kashmir. The plea also seeks "immediate release of political leaders from illegal custody". Poonawalla will mention the mention the plea on Thursday for urgent hearing.
Malala Yousafzai Tweets in Support of Resolving the Kashmir Conflict
Nobel Peace Prize winner and Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, on Thursday, 8 August, tweeted in support of “resolving a seven-decade-old conflict in Kashmir.” She wrote, “The people of Kashmir have lived in conflict since I was a child, since my mother and father were children, since my grandparents were young.”
’Has Muscular Nationalism Resolved Any Conflict in World,’ Asks P Chidambaram
Senior Congress leader and former home minister P Chidambaram on Thursday, 8 August, attacked the government over its actions on Jammu and Kashmir, asking if "muscular nationalism" has resolved any conflict in the world.
Chidambaram also cited former civil servant Shah Faesal’s comments on the issue to hit out at the government.
"Shah Faesal came first in the Civil Services Examination and joined the IAS. He has called the government’s actions on J&K as ’the biggest betrayal’," Chidambaram said in one of a series of tweets.
If Shah Faesal thinks so, imagine what millions of ordinary people of J&K think, he said.
PM Modi Likely to Address Nation Today, Might Talk About Kashmir
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to address the nation on Thursday, 8 August during which he is expected to explain government’s decisions on abrogating special status to Jammu and Kashmir and splitting the state into two union territories, sources told PTI.
The proposed address comes days before the prime minister’s customary address to the nation on Independence Day from the ramparts of Red Fort.
’Respect for Individual Rights, Inclusive Dialogue With Those Affected’: US Urges India on Kashmir Move
Calling for calm and restraint, US Department of State told ANI “US is closely following India’s legislation regarding new territorial status and governance of J&K. We note the broader implications of these developments, including potential for increased instability in the region. US calls for calm and restraint by all parties.”
It further added “we continue to be concerned by reports of detentions and the continued restrictions on the residents of Jammu and Kashmir. We urge respect for individual rights, compliance with legal procedures, and inclusive dialogue with those affected. We call on all parties to maintain peace and stability along the Line of Control, including taking firm and resolute steps to combat cross-border terrorism. We continue to support direct dialogue between India and Pakistan on Kashmir and other issues of concern.”
Pakistan Partially Closes Its Airspace
Pakistan on Wednesday partially closed its airspace. It will be closed from 6 August to 5 September between 2:45 am to 11 am everyday except on Sundays, ANI reported.
It closed a corridor in its airspace, which will result in an additional up to12 minutes of flying time for overseas flights, an Air India official said on Wednesday.
The flights will have to be diverted to other routes due to the closure, PTI reported.
"One air corridor has been closed (in Pakistani airspace), requiring a maximum of 12 minutes diversion. It will not affect us (much)," said the Air India spokesperson.
Air India operates around 50 flights daily through Pakistani airspace.
’Hope Indian Govt Will Able by Principles of Democracy in J&K’: US House Foreign Affairs Committee
Eliot Engel, Chairman of US House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Senator B Menendez, Ranking Member of US Senate Foreign Relations Committee said “transparency and political participation are cornerstones of representative democracies, we hope Indian government will abide by these principles in J&K.”
The further asked Pakistan to refrain from any “retaliatory aggression”.
“At the same time, Pakistan must refrain from any retaliatory aggression including support for infiltrations across the Line of Control and take demonstrable action against the terrorist infrastructure on Pakistan’s soil,” they added.

Pakistan PM Imran Khan Dials Boris Johnson, Prince Salman Over Kashmir Issue
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday called his British counterpart Boris Johnson and Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman as part of his government’s plan to inform the world leaders about India’s decision over Article 370 and withdrawing the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, PTI reported.
As Khan was personally getting in touch with the world leader, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi is set to visit China to discuss the situation in Kashmir and ties with India.
Pak Modifies Aerial Routes, Flights From Afghanistan to Take Alternative Routes
Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has made changes in aerial routes for all airlines specifically for Lahore region and increased the minimum limit of flights’ altitude.
Foreign aircraft will not be permitted to fly below 46,000-feet altitude in Lahore region.
Flights from Afghanistan have been instructed to take alternative routes.

Pakistan initiated ceasefire violation around 10:15 pm in Sunderbani Sector of Rajouri district on Wednesday, ANI reported. Indian Army retaliated.
UN Chief’s Spokesperson Silent on Claims That India Violated UNSC Resolutions
A spokesperson for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has declined to comment on claims that scrapping of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status by India is in violation of the Security Council resolutions, reiterating only that the UN chief is following the developments in the region with concern.
"I think we have expressed our… we said very clearly that we are following the developments in the region with concern. We…the Secretary General’s position at this point is to urge all parties to exercise restraint," Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday, PTI reported.
Capt Amarinder Expresses Concern Over Pak Decision to Downgrade Ties with India
Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday expressed concern over Pakistan’s decision to downgrade diplomatic ties with India, saying "Islamabad’s reaction was knee-jerk and uncalled for".
Amarinder, however, hoped the move would not adversely impact the construction of the Kartarpur Corridor, ANI reported quoting the CMO’s office.
Restrictions in Kashmir To Be Relaxed for People to Participate in Eid-ul-Zuha
In a meeting on Wednesday evening, Governor Satya Pal Malik reviewed arrangements for enabling people to perform Friday prayers and for celebration of Eid-ul-Azha in the coming week.
Mandis will be set up at different locations in the Valley and ration shops, grocery and medicine stores have reportedly been asked to remain open on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
The Governor has also passed directions for setting up telephone lines in Deputy Commissioners’ offices for students (from J&K studying in other states) to talk to their families back home, ANI reported.
’No Nation Has Locus Standi on This’: BJP’s R Madhav on Pak Decision to Downgrade Bilateral Relations
Reacting to Pakistan’s decision of downgrading bilateral relations with India, BJP leader R Madhav told reporters on Wednesday that Pakistan has no locus standi on the issue.
"The Indian Parliament had taken a decision about Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir, and that is an internal matter. No other nation has locus standi to react on this," Madhav reportedly said.
