Mangaluru, August 28, 2016: The birth of People`s Association Of Geriatric Empowerment (PAGE), in the year 2012 is being revived in the light of fresh needs. All the organisations caring for the Elderly in the city of Mangaluru so that the activities of one organisation is known to the other and also to identify gaps in care of the elderly and create facilities and also cause successful projects.
Currently a vital cause is on the anvil - ’Remember’: September is World Alzheimer’s Month!September 2016 will mark the fifth global World Alzheimer’s Month™, a campaign to raise awareness of dementia and challenge stigma. The theme for World Alzheimer Month 2016 is ’Remember Me’. Encouraging people all around the world to learn to spot the signs of dementia.
Dr Olinda Periera Founder Director Vishwas trust is the President, Dr Prabha Adhikari, Professor of Medicine and Founder Director of KMC Nava Chaitanya and Secretary of Spoorthi Charitable Trust was the Vice President and Lidwin Lobo, in-charge of Elder Helpline Vishwas trust is the Secretary. In addition Mr Raghavan Past President AGE Mangalore, Loretta Lobo President of ProBus Club, Mr Ramesh Rao, Secretary Mangalore Senior Citizen`s Association, Dr Anasooya Salian and Sri B T Salian former presidents of KMC Nava Chaitanya, Sri Jeradin D Souza Founder Mangalore Alzheimer`s Association, Mr Sandeep from Sahaya,Mohan Raj from Bright HR Solutions are the members of PAGE.
This year for the cause of Alzheimer`s Month several people and some more organisations have joined to strengthen our hands and we feel deeply honoured by the support from Lion`s District Governor LION Arun M Shetty,Dr Keshava Pai and Dr Mariella D Souza,Department of Psychiatry,Kasturba Medical College ,Nitte University represented by Prochancellor Dr Shanathram Shetty and Dr Satish Rao ,Psychiatry Department ,Yenepoya University ,Social Science Department Mangalore University ,Medical Superintendent AJ Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangalore,Yenepoya Nursing College ,Syndicate Bank Hampankatta,Syndicate Bank ,KMC Hospital Attavar, Indospect Pharma company, STAR Insurance
Every 3 seconds, someone in the world develops dementia. India and other developing countries are going to be the worst hit because of population ageing and rising risk factors for dementia such as diabetes, physical inactivity ,midlife hypertension ,smoking and alcohol abuse .India is estimated to have nearly 4.5 million people with dementia and the number is likely to rise to nearly 13 million by 2050 and we are poorly prepared.
The members of PAGE(People`s Association of Geriatric Empowerment ) group of organisations of the city of Mangalore and Udupi want to observe the month in an Unique Way with activities spread throughout the month with the goal of making the City of Mangalore and Udupi Dementia Friendly
Activities Listed for the Month: 1.Launch of The Alzheimer`s Month at Kadri Park,Mangalore on Sept1, 2016 at 7AM. 2.Month long awareness programme at multiple locations for multiple groups. 3.Slogan Competetion on Dementia /Memory within each organisation by writing the slogan on the pages of Memory pad that will be provided by the committee and select the two best slogans and send it to the committee for award by 10 th September 4.Care Giver award –Please send nominations by sending the names and contact details of the care giver and the name of the patient with dementia that they are caring for .and send it to PAGE office through E mail or SMS by 10 th September 2016. 5.Award for People living with dementia who have achieved something despite the diagnosis of dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment –Please send nominations to PAGE
Office through E mail or SMS by 10 th September 2016. 6.Wearing Badges with the Theme Slogan –Remember Me at all meeting places during the month. 7.Wearing Theme coloured dresses –Red and White or Red or White Throughout the month . 8.Setting up of Memory clinic based on the Guidelines given by Alzheimer`s and
Related Disorder International (ARDSI) in Medical Colleges, Hospitals, Clinics and get it accredited by ARDSI.Setting up of Simple Memory Screening Test Centres at Senior Ciitzen`sGroup Organisations ,Service organisations for early detection of Cognitive Impairment and referral and making it popular like blood sugar tests and BP check and offer it as a package for seniors. 10.Celebration of the Alzheimer`s Day on 21 st September 2016 between 9-12 Noon at Town Hall with distribution of the awards and a show by Seniors on Warning signs of Dementia and Risk reduction Join the campaign!
