Oscar Fernandes elected as AICC secretary

Oscar Fernandes elected as AICC secretary March 5: Oscar Fernandes and Vinayakumar Sorake have been appointed as the general secretary and secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), respectively on March 4, Friday.


Oscar, who started his political career as a councilor of Udupi Municipal Corporation in 1971, represented Udupi Lok Sabha five times and was thrice elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka. The Mangalore University has conferred an honorary doctorate on him. Mr. Fernandes has also served as the president of the Udupi Auto Rickshaw Owners and Drivers’ Association.


Sorake enjoys a great deal of popularity in Puttur, Udupi, and Mangalore. Having served as the MLA of Puttur from 1985 to 1995, he was elected as the MP from Udupi in 1999. He has served as NSUI state president, the joint secretary of the All India Youth Congress Committee, and as the general secretary of KPCC three times. He was also the director of Syndicate Bank till recently.


Union Minister Mallikarjun Kharge is no longer in the Congress working committee. Veerappa Moily is also no longer in the AICC committee. Instead of Ghulam Nabi Azad, Madhusudan Mistry of Gujarat will take charge of Congress affairs in Karnataka.


These changes are as per the party’s latest one person one post formula.
