One year’s jail fine for social media crime

Mangaluru, May 22, 2015 : A 26-year-old man  was sentenced by the third Judicial First Class Magistrate here to one year imprisonment for morphing the image of his childhood friend and circulating it on a social networking site.


One year’s jail fine for social media crimeThe court has slapped a fine of Rs 1.50 lakh too. The accused is Debaraj Sen Gupta (26).


On February 21, 2010, the Kavoor police had received a complaint from a woman stating that a few persons have been calling her seeking sexual favours as her photo has been morphed and is being circulated in a social networking site. 


  During the investigation, the police traced the internet protocol address of the computer and arrested Debaraj Sen Gupta.

The police had seized computer used by Debaraj Sen Gupta and sent it to Forensic Science Laboratory, Hyderabad for analysis. The officials from Forensic Science Lab had confirmed morphing of photographs. Based on the evidence, the accused has been convicted under Section 66 and 67 of the IT Act.
