A State-level youth conference will be held at Vittal in the month of November and several issues will be discussed with the officials on the occasion.

The pending Youth awards will be conferred to the achievers next year. The department will be strengthened using youth, he said.   Abhaychandra Jain conferred Youth awardsof the year 2007-08 and 2008-09 to individuals and organisations. He hailed the achievements of youth, especially from Sullia taluk, for their hard work though they are far from district headquarters.

‘Continue good old tradition’  :   Earlier, Forest, Environment and Ecology Minister B Ramanath Rai said that Dakshina Kannada has carved its niche in the field of sports. Many sports personalities from the district have earned name and fame in national and international-level. The district had also organised national-level spots meet.

However, the organisation work has lost its effectiveness in recent times. The registered Yuvaka and Yuvathi Mandalas can participate in the sports meet, but the registration is not being done properly. District youth empowerment department officials should take notice of this, he suggested.

“The sportsmen of our era used to actively participate even in Mysore Dasara sports competitions. We have to continue good old tradition and should not fall behind among other districts,” he said.

Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim launched the sports meet by releasing the tricolour balloons. University-level high jump record holder Supreath Raj administered oath to athletes. Dakshina Kannada District Yuvajana Okkuta President Rajiv Salian, Youth Empowerment and Sports Department Deputy Director Panduranga Gowda were present among others.
