One day Farmers Convention deliberates to maintain stability in produce prices

Udupi, Jan 30, 2018: Speaking at Udupi,  after inaugurating the one day Farmers Convention organized by the District Krishika Sangha, Karnataka State Agriculture Price Commission chairman Dr T N Prakash Kammaradi opined that the Central government should stop imports of agricultural commodities to balance inflation which would indirectly affect the farmers.

Kammaradi said that the Central and state governments have equal responsibilities to protect the farmers by justifying a reasonable price to their produce.

He added that governments should purchase agricultural commodities on time when farmers are undergoing the problem of low price. He further said that the state government should earmark at least Rs 5000 crore revolving fund to ensure stability in the prices of farm produce.

Kammaradi said that farmers are prey for the middlemen. In this scenario, the government should take this major initiative. He said that the Price Commission is taking all necessary measures to keep farmers updated on the market prices of their products so that they can prepare themselves for any unexpected developments.

Asserting that the Karnataka government has taken many initiatives to respond to grievances of the farmers, Kammaradi said that the support price offered to cereals like Ragi and Jowar are highest. He added that horticultural yields are also offered support price which is helping farmers to get good value for their produce, he noted.

Stating that market stability and the profitable market price is essential for the sustenance of agriculture, Kammaradi noted that the farmers should be aware of the market probabilities and government should take measures in this direction.

He said that in the past four years, the state government has purchased 205 lakh quintal of various agricultural and horticultural growths from the farmers. As many as 4.54 lakh farmers are benefited, while Rs 1 lakh each has been deposited in the bank account of farmers.

Maintaining that the scientific research of agricultural goods is nothing but added expenditure in the process of production, Kammaradi said that the commission has come up with an elaborate report on 26 agricultural growths and the report is submitted to the government. In the past three years, the government has taken decisions based on recommendations made in the report by the commission.

He added that the state commission has adopted eight villages which are taking up an integrated approach towards farming and helping out farmers with all necessary assistance in terms of farming and also healthcare requirements of farmers.

Delivering the keynote address agriculture scientist Dr Ravi Bhat said farmers should adopt multi-culture and integrated farming approach to overcome crop loss. The farmers should also concentrate on growing crops suited to the environment and soil conditions in the area, he added.
