Mangaluru, Dec 12, 2014 : A team of officials which raided a sand mining area at Pavoor Uliyakudru island have arrested nearly six persons on December 12, Friday.
The raiding team was led by Mangaluru Tahsildar P Mohan Kumar. He was accompanied by Mangaluru Rural Police. The team which acted on a tip off has also seized over 20 boats and two lorries for extracting sand from river Netravathi despite the administration banning the same in the area.
The raid follows a complaint lodged by local residents with Deputy Commissioner AB Ibrahim stating that the unabated sand extraction has shrunk the island which is a home to nearly 958 families.
As the island comes under the CRZ, no permission is given to undertake sand mining.
