October 2, 2018 will see Udupi free from garbage

Udupi, Aug 17,2017: Udupi district administration has come up with the unique task wherein the district would be ensured as garbage-free by October 2, 2018 through increasing the garbage value and transforming every bit of garbage into productivity.

Speaking to media, District-In charge Minister Pramod Madhwaraj said the district is under intensive package programme. The programme is adopted in order to utilise the available garbage in the effective manner. He said the garbage generated will help to mobilise the revenue which will help the rural and urban local bodies to function. Solid waste management project will be taken up elaborately by taking the public into confidence, he said.

He said each gram pancahyat is allotted Rs 20 lakh under Swachh Bharat Mission, as the district is declared as open defecation-free.

Udupi DC Priyanka Mary Francis said that programme will be taken up separately in urban and rural areas. Three gram panchayats, namely Varamballi, Nitte and Gangolli are taken up and the project will be completely implemented in four months, following which the project will be taken up in all other gram panchayats. Around 250 households will be taken in each gram panchayat in the initial phase. Meetings will be held in many phases and the public will be told about the measures required to be adopted. Garbage will be done collected twice a day and minimal amount of Rs three will be charged.

The DC said Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 will be strictly implemented. Persons who do not cooperate will be fined heavily. Two buckets with the calendar will be presented to each household and segregation of waste will be done by the Self-help Group (SHG) members and people with disability, who would be appointed for the employment. Every type of waste will be treated and something productive will be generated, she said.

She said burning of waste is strictly prohibited. If a household is not giving away at least the dry waste, it would be assumed that the household is burning the waste. A survey involving the SHG member will be taken to look into the amount of waste generated and the way of disposal as there is a need to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to submit to the government for the release of funds, she added. The survey will focus on the specifics like the employments of the house members, number of pets they have and other miniscule details to keep the track, she said.
