night patrolMangaluru, Dec 18, 2016: Reports state that the Mangaluru city police will intensify night patrolling by policemen across the city once the newly recruited civil constables join duty after training.

The issue was raised during the phone-in programme with the city police on Dec 16, Friday by a senior citizen resident from Kavoor. He said increased police patrolling would enhance sense of safety among the residents.

Responding to this, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) M. Shantharaju said patrolling was being done even now. However, it would be intensified once the ongoing recruitment of civil police constables was over the new recruits join duty after training.

He told media that orders for 119 new recruits had been issued and they would go for nine-month training. Recruitment for another 150 constables is under way, he said.

As there are no city armed reserve constables (CAR) in the city, civil police are drafted for escorting prison inmates to courts, thus reducing the numbers for actual policing. Though 242 CAR constables are recruited last month against 342 vacancies, again, they are under training and they would be available only after nine months, he said.
