New vented dam at Thumbe, store water upto 5 mts, says state CS

Mangaluru, October 23, 2016: Mangaluru City Corporation authorities have been directed by Karnataka State chief secretary Subhash Chandra Khuntia to store water up to level of five meters in the newly constructed vented dam at Thumbe. Existing vented dam at Thumbe is the major source of drinking water to the city and the upstream weirs are the major source for industrial use and water is being stored up a height of four meters at the existing vented dam. The new vented dam is some 50-metres downstream.

Reviewing the progress of various departments at Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat on Oct 22,  Saturday, Khuntia directed Mohammad Nazeer, commissioner, MCC to immediately submit proposal to the state government for the compensation amount that needs to be paid to land owners for land that needs to be acquired when water is stored to a height of five metres. The new vented dam is capable of storing water to a level of seven metres, three metres more than the existing dam.

DK DC Dr. K G Jagadeesha, drew attention of Khunita to the extent of compensation that needs to be paid if water is stored to the maximum level of seven metres as envisaged. Mohammad Nazeer said the city corporation will be required to acquire 450 acres of land if the civic body wants to store water to level of seven metres. Explaining that MCC is storing water to a level of four metres, he said 56 acres of land will have to be acquired if water is stored up to five metres.
