New twist to Swathi ’suicide case: Daughter harassed by in-laws, complains mother

Mangaluru, Aug 27, 2016:  A suspected case of suicide of a young married woman at Moodumarrnadu on August 13 has taken a new twist with Varija Shetty, the mother of the deceased lodging a complaint with the Moodbidri police alleging that her daughter had committed suicide due to the dowry harassment by her in-laws.

Swathi It may be recalled here that Swathi from Belthangady was given in marriage to Sharath Chandra, son of Bhoja Shetty from Moodumarnadu two years ago. Swathi’s husband works in the Gulf and Swathi, an MSW graduate used to work in Mangaluru and used to travel daily to and fro Moodumarnadu.

It is said that on August 13 Swathi had visited her mother to complain about the harassment meted out to her by her in-laws.


However her mother had   consoled her and had sent her back to her husband’s home. However the same day Swathi was found in a semi- conscious state after she had reportedly attempted suicide consuming poison. Though she was immediately shifted to hospital, she had passed away on August 18. Police had initially registered this as a case of suicide.
