New lease of life to three, organs donated by young mason’s family

Mangaluru, Apr 21, 2016: A media release from A.J. Hospital and Research Centre here states that 20-year-old Vijayakanth, a masonry worker from Somvarpet in Kodagu district, sustained head injuries during work and he was rushed to Father Muller Medical College Hospital and was later shifted to A.J. Hospital and Research Centre on April 16.

Vijayakanth He was declared brain dead on April 19. Soon after the hospital team swung into action and approached Vijayakanth’s brother Ramesh and other family members for organ donation.

Family members agreed and further procedures for organ harvest was duly completed. Organ retrieval process was started on Apr 20, Wednesday morning.

Harvested organs have been distributed as per Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation directive. According to hospital authorities, liver was taken to Bengaluru via an early morning flight on Apr 20,  Wednesday to Apollo Hospital.

One kidney has been taken to Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, and the other is being transplanted at A.J. Hospital it self. Vijayakanth is survived by his father Pakiraswamy, mother Mani, older brother Ramesh and a younger sister. His parents are labourers and brother Ramesh is a mason.
