Sources in the DPUE said that the I PU classes will now begin on May 24. The department had advanced the calendar of events by a month as examinations of the previous academic year were completed early due to the State Assembly elections.

With the SSLC exam results being announced on Monday, many PU colleges were struggling to complete their admission process before the earlier deadline. ManyPU colleges that The Hindu spoke to said thatthey would re-open only in the last week of May or first week of June as they were racing against time to complete admissions. Most colleges will be displaying the cut-off list in the third week of May.

“We need to give students and parents at least a week’s time to apply. After that, we need a minimum of one week to process the admissions. So, even if we have to defy the calender of events of the department, we will do so for the benefit of students,” a city-based principal said.

Many parents are now heaving a sigh of relief with the department postponing the re-opening date. Mangala Padmanabha, a parent, whose child is applying to various colleges in the science stream, said, “It would have been very difficult for parents to complete the process in a week. There are multiple formalities that need to be completed that include arranging the fees, books and getting the duplicate marks card from the school,” she said.

However, many colleges are sticking to the old schedule and are giving parents just a week to complete the admission formalities and pay the fees. This has caused anxiety among parents who are urging the department to issue a circular to all colleges at the earliest.
