New city bus-stands for Udupi, Manipal and Malpe

Udupi, Aug 5, 2015: It was decided at a meeting on the traffic impact study for the purpose, chaired by MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, Aug 4. Superintendent of Police K. Annamalai will coordinate with officials of various departments to facilitate the construction of modern bus-stands in Udupi, Malpe and Manipal.
Earlier, Sylvia Prakash, Transport Planner, Directorate of Urban Land Transport, gave a presentation on proposals for the construction of the bus-stands.
The proposed bus-stand in Manipal would come up on 1.6 acres and would have 10 bus platforms, three footpaths, two autorickshaw bays and commercial establishments. The cost of its construction is estimated at Rs. 5.12 crore.
The proposed bus-stand in Malpe will come up on 1.6 acres. It will have two bus platforms, an autorickshaw bay, shops, six footpaths, and parking facility for 160 two-wheelers and 70 four-wheelers. It is estimated to cost Rs. 4.17 crore.
Two proposals have been prepared for the bus-stand in Udupi, which would come up on 0.8 acres. The first proposal provides for seven bus bays, seven bus shelters and three footpaths. The second proposal provides for six bus bays and six bus shelters and three footpaths. It is estimated to cost Rs. 2.2 crore.
Prakash also proposed construction of a skywalk to reduce congestion in the areas around the Udupi City Bus-Stand and Service Bus Stand.
MLA Madhwaraj said that additional land for construction of new bus-stand in Malpe would be made available from the Department of Ports. Since all the three bus-stands would be located by the side of National Highway 169A, coordination with the National Highway authorities was essential.
It was also necessary to take private city bus operators, autorickshaw drivers, taxi drivers, fisher folk and shopkeepers into confidence. They should not feel threatened by the new proposals. The feasibility of change in traffic system suggested in the proposals also needed to be studied. These proposals required coordination between various departments, which would be done by SP Annamalai.
P. Yuvaraj, president of Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC), Amrita Krishnamurthy, CMC vice-president, D. Manjunathayya, CMC Commissioner, T.J. Guruprasad, tahsildar, among others were present.
