Neglegence ’no way’ says hospital, minister orders probe

Mangaluru, Mar 27, 2015: Omega Hospital has denied all wrong and negligence in the heart surgeries  done on 70-year-old Povakka and nine-year-old Aishat Haseena, who died recently.  Chief Cardiologist K. Mukund said Poovakka had blood pressure, chest pain and 98 per cent block was noticed in her heart.

After taking consent of her relative, the hospital carried out operation on March 15.  Absolutely nothing wrong in the procedures  followed, said Dr. Mukund.  Adding that the patient was discharged from the hospital on March 18 after she was found fit.  The hospital will await the autopsy report.

Regarding Aishat Haseena, Dr. Mukund said the child was an endosulfan victim with intellectual disability. Brushing aside allegation of family members that they were given false hope of improvement in the child’s condition after cardiac surgery, Dr. Mukund said surgical intervention was necessary as there was narrowing of the main artery supplying blood to the body.

Misplaced accusations :   Denying Arlapadavu resident  Ibrahim’s allegation that he was forced to undergo an open heart surgery, Dr. Mukund said they suggested surgery as they had noticed blocks in his heart. As he refused to undergo surgery,  nothing was done.  He also denied the allegation that the hospital forced villagers to undergo surgical interventions by confiscating their BPL ration cards.   Dr. Mukund said the hospital was submitting the Suvarna Aarogya Trust details of the medical camp and also procedures done for beneficiaries of Vajpayee Arogyashree Scheme.

PROBE ORDERED :  Health and Family Welfare Minister U.T. Khader said action will be taken against the  hospital if any discrepancies are noticed in the conducting of the camp and procedures done on beneficiaries.

Minister Khader said a detailed set of regulations have been set for conducting health camps and procedures to be followed under the Vajpayee Aroyashree scheme. Procedures on the beneficiaries are done only after approval of a committee of experts overseeing the programme in Bengaluru is obtained.

Minister  Khader said he has sought a detailed report about the camp and procedures to closely look into the two deaths and allegations made by patients.
