Superintendent of Police Pravin Pawar, who was at the spot of the encounter, told presspersons that, the incident took place around 4.30 p.m. There were three suspected naxalites: two men and one woman.

The identity of the persons killed in the encounter is yet to be established. The two others managed to escape. One police constable was also injured in the encounter. He has been admitted to a hospital in Manipal.

The suspected naxalites were on higher ground, while the personnel from district police and the ANF were in an area below them when the encounter took place. Since there were some bloodstains at the spot, it is possible that one of the naxalites (who had escaped) might have been injured, Mr. Pawar said. Combing operations are continuing in the area, Mr. Pawar said.

However, according to reports, the suspected naxalite killed in the encounter is Vasanth Gowdlu, a resident of Potanathadka in Kuthlur village near Naravi in Dakshina Kannada district. He belonged to the Malekudiya community, a Scheduled Tribe, and his house is said to be in the Kudremukh National Park area.
