NMPT joins hands with Shell India, VisionSpring for eye screening of truck drivers

Mangaluru, Nov 19, 2019:  New Mangalore Port Trust Chairman A V Ramana on November 19, Tuesday launched an eye screening  programme for  commercial  truck drivers and allied transport workers transiting through the port. The NMPT has joined hands with  Shell India and VisionSpring for  this eye screening and eyeglasses distribution initiative. The programme will be  held at the NMPT premises till December end.

Speaking on the occasion, A V Ramana pointed out that most accidents that take place during night time are due to drunken driving or poor vision of the drivers. He also stated that  accident committed by truck drivers constitute 26% of the nearly 1. 5 lakh fatal accidents reported  every year in the nation.

Ekta Kumar, Country Head (CSR), Shell India Ltd said  the initiative will help 3.65 lakh drivers and allied workers to drive safely. The initiative has also been taken up in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu too and apart from free vision test drivers will also get eyeglasses.
