NMPT bags ‘Port of the Year’ award in Coastal Shipping

Mangaluru, Aug 10, 2016: It is reported that NMPT, New Mangalore Port Trust has bagged India Seatrade (Coastal Shipping and IWT) Award 2016 for being the “major port of the year” in Coastal Shipping category. This award has been conferred considering its contribution towards promoting coastal shipping.

The India Seatrade Award for Excellence in Coastal Shipping and IWT recognizes institutions, enterprises, ports and individuals who have made a difference with their outstanding contributions in developing, supporting and scaling coastal shipping and inland water transportation in India. New Mangalore Port, in its endevour to promote coastal shipping has taken various steps like earmarking exclusive berths, storage sheds, gates and so on for the smooth movement of coastal cargo. This has resulted in attracting new coastal cargo like pet coke, building materials, granite and so on. During the year 2015-16, the Port has witnessed 15% growth in coastal traffic. In addition to the above, Ro-Ro service between Mangaluru and Hazira has also begun at NMPT.

The award was presented to PC Parida, Chairman of NMPT by K Mohandas, IAS (Rtd.), former Secretary to Government of India, Ministry of Shipping on August 5, 2016 in the presence of Ravindra Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Shipping at the award function held at Kochi.
