NITTE University celebrated “International World Disability Day”

Mangaluru, Dec 04, 2019: “International World Disability Day” for differently abled children was celebrated on 3rd December 2019. This day is dedicated to specially abled children who have or are at an increased risk for chronic physical, developmental, behavioural or emotional conditions like those who are suffering from mental disorder, deafness, blindness, physical handicap, etc. The dental hygiene of these children is often neglected so they are at an increased risk of oral health problems like teeth cavities and gum diseases.

Addressing the needs of these children, NITTE (Deemed to be University) in collaboration with Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd (MCF), Sarva Shikshana Abhyana, Mangalore South Zone, Government of Karnataka and “Special Olympics Bharat” celebrated International Disability Day on 3rdDecember 2019 through a program conducted by NITTE Special Child Care (N-SPECC). The event was presided over by Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandhary, Vice Chancellor, NITTE University, other guests present were Mr. Mohd. Monu (President, Mangalore Taluk Panchayat), Mrs. Dhanalakshmi Gatti (Zilla Panchayat Member), Prof. (Dr.) P.S. Prakash (Dean, KSHEMA), Prof. (Dr.) U.S. Krishna Naya (Dean, A.B. Shetty Dental College), Dr. Major Shivkumar Hiremath (Medical Superintendent, KSHEMA), Mr. Lokesh SR (B.E.O Mangalore South), Dr. Prashant Kumar KS (BRC Coordinator), Mr. Prabhakar Rao (Head of MCF), Dr. Yogesh (MCF) Prof. (Dr.) Amitha M Hegde (President, N-SPECC), Prof. (Dr.) Amarshree Shetty (Secretary N-SPECC).’

The program started at 9 am with a counselling lecture by Dr. Reshma N, from Department of Psychiatry, KSHEMA, followed by a skit by post-graduates from Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, ABSMIDS. An inaugural address was given by Prof. (Dr.) Amarshree Shetty (Secretary N-SPECC) and Prof. (Dr.) U.S. Krishna Nayak (Dean, A.B. Shetty Dental College) gave the welcome address. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandhary, Vice Chancellor, NITTE University and Mr. Prabhakar Rao, Head of Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF). Various aids and appliances such as 4 CP beds, 3 wheelchairs, 2 walkers, a hearing aid and a walking stick were donated which was briefed by Mrs Cynthia D’souza . Ms. Kasthuri was felicitated by Prof. (Dr.) Amitha M Hegde (PRESIDENT, N-SPECC) for her exceptional contribution in the field of music. The program culminated at 3pm in a cultural program for the children by the 3rd year undergraduate students of A.B. Shetty Dental College followed by various competitions for the special children.
