Muslim inter sect clash injures many, two detained

Mangaluru, Mar 29, 2016: A fierce clash between the Sunnis and the Salafis broke out in Montepadau on outskirts of Mangaluru, late on Sunday March 27, night, in which many were injured.

The condition of the two is said to be critical and two have been arrested in connection to the same.  Sunni members Hakim Montepadau, Kadaba Abbas, Kadaba Haneef, Hasan Mukhri, Ummer Bail, U T Shaukath have been injured apart form a few others, it is said.

Salafi members Abdul Aziz, Hussein Fahad, Ismail Samaniga, Faizal, Fahad, Imran, Jalli Abbu, Mohommed have been injured.  UT Shaukat and Ismail are in critical state.


Recap :  It is said that over the last one week, Salafi sect members have been propagating their belief in Konaje area. A programme was organised near Montepadau Masjid on March 27, evening, without any permission.

Various scholars were presenting talks over the evening and as last speaker K E Sohail Abdullah was presenting talk on ‘Faith of one God’, when Sunni members barged into the venue and started attacking the gathering.

It is said that the police had given adequate security till the last speaker’s talk. When the attack took place, the police had just left for another programme. Seizing the opportunity, the Sunni members waged attack.

It is said that Montepadau has about 19 per cent Sunni followers and one per cent Salafis.  The Salafi scholars making scornful and derogatory remarks on Sunnis and their beliefs reportedly led to the violence.
