Mangalore, Nov 27: The Muslims are celebrating Eid-ul-Azha or Eid-u-Adah all over the district on Nov 27, Friday. The festival is celebrated on the 10th day of Dhul Hijja as per the Islamic lunar calendar; and the celebrations continue for 2 or 3 days.

Eid-ul-Adah, a festival of sacrifice, is known in local circles as “Haj Pernal.” Muslims celebrate this festival in memory of the Prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail to God. Pleased with Abraham’s obedience, God saved his son and provided a goat instead for the sacrifice.

The Eid-ul-Azha ceremony commences with a prayer service followed by sermon. Members of the Muslim community wear their best clothes and visit the mosque for prayer service.

Those who can afford it celebrate this feast by sacrificing a goat or sheep. The meat is then shared among friends, family members, as well as the poor. After the prayer ceremony at the mosque, Muslims embrace and greet one another in goodwill and friendship.
