Murder accused caught after 16 years in Tamil Nadu

Mangalore, Sep 6, 2014:    Addressing mediapersons on Sept 5, Superintendent of Police S D Sharanappa said that police arrested Raja in Thirupur district of Tamil Nadu. Raja alias Raju had murdered his wife at his house in Pudu village in Bantwal taluk 16 years ago. Just a month ago, as reported in "Mangalore Today’ a murder accused who was absconding in Tamil Nadu since 13 years, was nabbed by the Dakshina Kannada district police it may be recalled.

A tiff between husband and wife had ended in Raja murdering his wife Devi at their rented house in Pudu village in 1998. He had then fled to Tamil Nadu with an intention to escape from the police. In Tamil Nadu, he began working as a daily wage labourer and had married a woman and started a family.  DCIB police came to know about his presence in Tamil Nadu in 2012, they followed-it up recently and acting on a tip-off, the SP said.

A team comprising of DCIB Assistant Sub Inspector Sanjeev Pursuha and staff carried out the operation. Raja was produced before the court and remanded to police custody on Sept 5. He has been handed over to Bantwal police for further investigation. Conduct of the accused post crime is yet to be examined.

Shyam Prasad Shastri -note seized :  Commenting on the alleged suicide case of Shyam Prasad Shastri in Puttur, brother of Diwakar Shastri arrested in connection to blackmailing Raghaweshwara Bharathi Swamiji, the SP said that investigation officer has seized a note written by the victim. The letter is yet to be subjected to examination. A comprehensive study has to be made in this case, he said while refusing to divulge information about the content of the letter. He also said that the department would give police protection to Shastri’s family, if they request for it.
