Town Panchayat is set to go for the execution of a new project at a cost of Rs 1.75 crore. Currently, a waste collection unit is being used only for the collection of waste and there was no programme for the management of waste. A project towards the same, will be initiated in near future, at the water collection unit head post office road.

The 2.38 acre area has a protection wall and the waste collected from the houses across the town in tractors, is being dumped at the unit. The Town Panchayat  now hopes to implement a new scheme of scientific segregation of waste and converting it to manure. Panchayat Engineer Padmanabha said that Rs 25 lakh will be utilised for the waste collection space. A manure manufacturing unit will be set up at a cost of Rs 45 lakh, a shed will be built for rain water harvesting at a cost of Rs 25 lakh, a two storied building of the unit will be constructed at a cost of Rs 55 lakh, a JCB and a waste collecting vehicle will be purchased at a cost of Rs 25 lakh, he said and added that the new unit will be set up at the existing place.

Panchayat Chief Officer Vani Alva said that a proposal towards the project will be sent to the Directorate of Municipal administration and will be carried out under the guidance of elected representatives and the ministers. Though efforts were made to implement a similar project three years ago and a land was also earmarked at Elattur in the limits of Kinigoli Gram Panchayat limits, the project was eventually shelved, due to opposition from the local villagers. The citizens of Mulki hope that the local administration will successfully implement the waste management system, in association with the local organisations, towards clean Mulki. Balkunje Mandala former member Sadhu Anchan Mattu said that the present waste collection unit is situated near  education institutions, Venkataramana Temple, Manasthambha of Jain tradition and a large drinking water sump. The bad stench mixes with the atmosphere, the street dog menace has increased too.Mattu, urged the TP to solve the problems and to implement the project with proper planning and ethics.
