Msgr. Alexander D’Souza - Former VG and Konkani doyen passes away

Alexander DsouzaMangaluru, August 20, 2015: Former Vicar General of Mangaluru Diocese, Konkani giant  Msgr Alexander Faustine D’Souza, well known former editor of Raknno Konkani weekly, passed away here on Thursday August 20. He was 89. He was often referred to as ’Monsinger’ a title given to the second in command of the Bishop.  Late Msgr Alexander D’Souza was born on May 29, 1926, served the diocese in Mangalore in various capacities.   Ordained on March 25, 1952, he served Bendore and Urwa parishes as assistant parish priest.

 

In 1955, he went to  Rome to pursue  higher studies, and after his return in 1958, he was appointed ICYM - India Christian Youth Movement diocesan director. He later served as director of council of women.

In 1961, he took charge as the editor of Raknno Konkani weekly, and continued till 1973. He served as parish priest of Bendore, Rosario Cathedral, Milagres, Valencia and Vamanjoor parishes.

In 1972, he was appointed vicar general of Mangaluru diocese, and also served as director of Father Muller Hospital from 1988 to 1991.   From 2001 to 2004, he was the chairman of Konkani Sahitya Academy. He retired to senior prietsts’ home in May 2005.  He is specially kmown for his unparelled work for the Konkani language whuich was close to his heart.  In recent times he was weak and ill but would not fail to be at  certain church functions. He was a great personality for the people of Mangalore in many ways.

NB: As per the information presently available, funeral rites will be held at Valencia Church on Monday August 24 at 9.30 am.  May his soul rest in peace.
