More than 100 DLs suspended for rash driving in city

Apr 07, 2016: Speaking to media on the sidelines of the SC/ST grievances meeting in the City on Apr 6, Wednesday,  Superintendent of Police Dr Sharanappa S D.  said district police have taken the issue of fatal accidents seriously and have suspended the driving licences of  at least 104 persons for negligent driving in the city.

The SP said, “Licences to drive are being suspended in association with the Department of Transport as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court. In 2015, a total of 86 licences were suspended, while in 2016 – from January to March 28 – 18 licences have been suspended.”


He said that the police are planning to suspend the licences of traffic offenders. “At present, the licences are suspended in accident cases where the victim has lost his or her life. The drive to check traffic offenders will be intensified in the future,” he warned.

SP Dr Sharanappa said that the rule making helmets mandatory for pillion riders has received good response from the general public in rural areas. As many as 5,687 persons were fined for not wearing helmet in the month of February and a fine of Rs 5,98,400 has been collected.

The SP said that he will hold talks with the MRPL and HPCL to reduce the time for shifting the gas in case of mishap in Ghat sections. “At present, although the quick response team reaches the spot immediately after the mishap, it takes 8 to 12 hours to shift the gas to another tanker,” he added.

 

Uppinangady SI to be investigated on complaints


Addressing a grievance redressal meeting for the members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes at his office in Mangaluru on Apr 6,  Wednesday, SP Sharanappa said that disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against the sub-inspector of Uppinnangady. If the inquiry reveals dereliction of duty, action would be taken, he said. Dalit activist Shekar Ajekar said that the Uppinangady sub-inspector failed to register the case despite local reporters informing him on January 18 about the incident. He also alleged that the sub-inspector turned away reports in newspapers about the alleged illegal sale of marijuana and asphalt mix. SP Sharanappa directed the police to register all complaints that reveal commission of cognisable offences.

An inquiry has been initiated against the sub-inspector attached to the Uppinangady police station, who has been accused of delaying registering a case of sexual assault on a minor girl, Superintendent of Police Sharanappa S.D. said.
