Addressing personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, the Fire and Emergency Services and Home Guards following a mock disaster management drill at Adyapady, Mr. Senthil said that laterite strata in the region poses a challenge in disaster operation.

“We will have a drill when it rains heavily,” Mr. Senthil said and added that focus will also be on periphery management by the police and Revenue Department personnel to prevent disturbance to teams involved in rescuing people trapped in landslips. “Today, I did not see police stopping vehicles from coming to the spot. Better discipline is necessary,” he said.

On the material necessary to handle disasters, officers from NDRF and Fire and Emergency Services said that the personnel needed anti-skid gumboots. An officer from District Home Guards said that there was a need for more ropes. Mr. Senthil sought from the officers a list of rescue material that need to be procured.

Earlier, personnel from NDRF 10th battalion, Fire and Emergency Services and Home Guards conducted a hour-long mock landslip rescue drill at a site in Adyapady, which was about 500 m away from the place of the May 2010 air crash.
