Mono-faculty universities destroy concept of university - Prof. Ranganath

Mangalore, Sep 13, 2011 : Prof. Ranganath, the director of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), delivered the 31st Foundation Day lecture of Mangalore University in its Mangala Auditorium on Monday.

 

university Expressing concern over the growth of mono-faculty universities such as medical and engineering, he said that this has had an adverse effect on the very concept of university, adding that mono-faculty universities cannot provide complete education. Pointing out the fact that students have to suffer because of this, he said that the study of advanced subjects will be incomplete without knowing basic sciences.

He also voiced his opinion that educational institutions should inculcate humanitarian values among the students and spoke of the importance of empowering and strengthening state universities.

Prof. T. C. Shivashankara Moorthy, the vice chancellor of Mangalore University, said in his presidential address, that teaching, research, and extension are essential to meet the demands of the modern world. He regretted the fact that India has achieved only 12.4 percent gross enrollment ration for higher education.

Prof. K. Chinnappa Gowda, the registrar (administration), Yadapadithaya, the registrar (evaluation), and Finance Officer Prof. Phakirappa were also present.
