Model Solid Waste Management System to be implemented in Konaje, Dharmasthala gram panchayats

Mangaluru, Jan 20, 2015:  The DK District Water and Sanitation Committee which met on January 19, Monday has decided to  implement a Model Solid Waste Management System in Konaje and Dharmasthala Gram Panchayat limits with the co-operation of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project.

The meeting resolved to discuss the matter with Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade and chalk out an action plan to implement  the projects in five Gram Panchayats of Dharmasthala and around  8 gram panchayats  in Konaje  on the lines of a solid waste management model implemented in Chikkamagalur TMC on behalf of the Dharmasthala Rural Development Project.

Raising the issue, ZP Vice President Satish Kumpala stressed the need for an effective solid waste management system. He also suggested that the system be implemented on a pilot basis in two taluks and later extended to other taluks.

ZP President Asha Timmappa Gowda,  presided over the meeting. ZP CEO Tulasi Maddineni  spoke about some measures that could be taken towards effective waste management.

It was informed at the meeting that as per the baseline survey in 2012, the construction of toilets for 356 families in five taluks is pending. The officials were directed to ensure early steps to construct all the toilets sanctioned.

It was also informed about the release of Rs 15.72 lakhs during the year 2014-15 for the management of 4815 hand pump  bore wells and sanction of Rs 3 crore grant for emergency drinking water facility . It was also suggested to make alternate water supply arrangements for schools facing water scarcity.
