MoU signed for construction of jetty for Lakshadweep vessels at old port

Mangaluru, Aug 26, 2015 : In a significant development, the Government of Karnataka and the Union Territory of Lakshadweep have signed a Memorandum of Understanding  on   August 26, Wednesday for the construction of a dedicated jetty  for the  Lakshadweep vessels at the old port in Bunder. The jetty is expected to come up on area of about 8,000 sq ft. The works  are likely to start once the requisite clearances are obtained.

 

State Minister for Ports and Textiles Baburao Chinchanasur who was in the city in this backdrop  spoke to the media men and said  the Karnataka Government would extend its full co-operation for the implementation of this project. He also directed the officials to complete the works on schedule.

Chinchanasur further stated that a dedicated jetty for Lakshadweep vessels was a longstanding demand which was pending implementation since over three decades. A grant of Rs 50 crore has been provided for the purpose, he added.

JR Lobo, MLA of Mangaluru South who also spoke described the MoU as a  milestone in the history of the port. He also hoped that trade between Mangaluru and Lakshadweep which was on the decline for want of a dedicated jetty would improve once the jetty is operational.

Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar in his address, stressed the need for dredging  at the old port and also at the Kulai and  Hejamady jetties.

PP Mohammad Faisal, MP of Lakshadweep appealed to the minister to make temporary arrangements for the anchoring of Lakshadweep vessels until the jetty works are complete.

Rajesh Prasad,  Lakshadweep administrator, Capt. Mohan Director of the Port, Ivan D’Souza, MLC and others were present.
