Minorities commission chairman express displeasure of work by department officials

Mangalore, Sep 13: Anwar Manipady, the chairman of the state minorities’ commission, said at a meeting held to review progress of implementation of schemes for minority development and to listen to the grievances of people belonging to minority communities that he will use the data collected at the meeting to make certain recommendations related to minority development to the government. 


Speaking on the occasion, Moses Jayashekar, the DDPI, said that the difference between school dropouts from minority and majority communities in DK is lesser than in other districts.

Shivaprakash, the project officer for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, said that infrastructure has been provided under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan scheme for 18 minority aided schools. He also said that 30 percent of the facilities under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan were given to minority children according to a government order. 


Dr. Sangameshwar, the district surgeon of Wenlock Hospital, arrived late to the meeting and lost his temper when he heard of various complaints regarding the service at Wenlock Hospital. Having arrived late, he also left early. 


The women and child welfare department and the fisheries department also gave a report regarding various projects launched by them for minority benefits. 


Members of the Muslim community requested salaries for teachers in Madarasas as some of the madarasas are facing financial difficulties. Members of the Christian community requested immediate withdrawal of cases registered against Christian youth during the church attacks of 2008.  


Manipady lost his temper with many officers who could not provide proper information. He was also angry about the fact that certain top-level officers had sent their subordinates instead of attending the meeting themselves. 


Regarding the issue of Muslim girls being allowed to wear scarves to class, he said that even the Quran does not make this compulsory, adding that students should maintain uniformity in the classrooms and that there is no need for girl students to wear scarves. 


Clarifying issues regarding Wafq property, he said that the records of 231 mosques have not been updated in the tahsildar’s office. He urged those concerned to update the records and send him a report in 10 days. 


Mafeeq Ahmed, the secretary of KMDC; Dr. Channappa Gowda, the DC; Seemanth Kumar Singh, the police commissioner; and Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, the CEO of ZP; were also present at the meeting.
