Minister moots high-risk delivery wards in taluks and districts

Mangalore, June 13, 2014: Chairing a meeting of the department on June 10,  U T Khader said  the   department of health and family welfare will set up high-risk wards in taluk and district hospitals across the state to preempt risks during child birth.

These wards will be equipped with ventilators and all equipment necessary to deal with the most difficult of situations.

While five wards will be set up in each taluk hospital, district hospitals will have 10 wards, Karnataka minister for health and family welfare U T Khader said.

Observing that such facilities are a must, Khader said plans are also afoot to set up full-fledged delivery centres one in every 10 villages. Directing health authorities to take good care of the health needs of women who are admitted to a government hospital for delivery, Khader said the hospitals cannot henceforth refuse to admit anyone citing complications. "I am aware of such practice among doctors in government hospitals.

The department will take serious view of such incidents," he added. "Asha workers must keep a track of all expectant mothers in their respective jurisdiction. They must remain in touch with such women till such time that they deliver ," he added.

Khader also directed officials to verify that new hospitals have all medical facilities in place before they opened to serve the public.
