Minister Sorake tells officials to compensate farmers without a do

Manipal, July 31, 2015:  Speaking at a review meet July 30,  Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake directed officials to give priority to the humanitarian need to compensate the farmer victims at the earliest under calamity relief fund.  The minister said although technical report over the life and property damages is the need, the officials should immediately respond to the disaster.

Vinay Kumar So...He added that poor and farmers should be compensated at the earliest and the officials should ensure efficient delivery of compensation package. He said that officials should consider damage to the old mud houses as complete damage instead of partial damage.

He said there is no scarcity of funds under Natural Calamity Relief Fund. He said a delegation of coastal district ministers had met chief minister and had demanded special compensation packages for sea erosion, crop loss and asset loss during natural calamities, he added. 

The minister directed the DC to organise a separate meet comprising Mescom officials and report over the damages. He said four people have lost lives owing to downpour and three have already been compensated.

Nearly Rs 12,700 was paid to a person who was injured after lightning struck him. Nine cattle were killed due to rains and Rs 1,31,500 has been paid as compensation. An amount of Rs 1,94,663 has been paid for 60 cases of horticultural crop loss. Crop loss in 20.11 acres has been compensated.  He said 15 crop loss incidents were reported and 8.66 acres of crop loss was compensated.

The minster added that 13 houses were completely damaged and Rs 8,68,700 was paid as compensation. Compensation was also been paid to partially damaged houses and fishing boat.

Udupi DC Dr R Vishal said that tahsildars of the three taluks are funded to respond immediately to calamities. The officials said that the survey for crop loss was in progress and a clear picture of loss should be available shortly. The compensation would be paid based on the survey report. As much as 1,355 metres of shore in Udupi, 450 meters in Kundapur were damaged due to sea erosion.

The minister instructed the officials to visit Shiroor, Kalihitlu, Yermal, Tenka, Padukere, Gangolli, Kundapur Kodi, Malpe and Kaup, that have suffered due to sea erosion.
