Mangaluru: September 13, 2015: The new SMS response system introduced by Mescom is another shock for consumers, who are already in the dark due to frequent power cuts.

Recently, the electricity company launched a new SMS response system where messages will be delivered to consumers when a bill is generated and thereafter when the same bill is paid. However, the system sends disconnection notice to consumers, who have already paid their bills too. Officials say that it is a ’technical error’ which will soon be rectified.

For instance, a bill issued to a consumer Vinayak (name changed) for the period from August 4 to September 4 was generated after a meter reading on September 4. He has made the payment at a Mescom kiosk on September 8. However, Vinayak said he received three messages via SMS asking him to pay the same bill.

The message also warned that the SMS may be treated as 15-day disconnection notice if Mescom does not receive payment within the due date. "How can they send a disconnection notice after I paid the bill?" he said.

Mescom executive engineer Manjappa said it is a technical error as the system was introduced recently. "It is a new system. There are possibilities of initial technical errors. We will rectify the error soon," he said.

Mescom has received complaints that people are not able to read the details on the bill as it is not printed with proper alignment.

"The issue will be soon be resolved. He said that Mescom is chalking out plans to replace the bill printing system with a new one. "We will find solutions to the issue of lack of alignment by introducing new printers soon," he said.
