Merchants oppose eviction of Farangipete fish market

Bantwal, Dec 13, 2018: A tense situation prevailed in Farangipete on December 13, Thursday following opposition expressed by  merchants and shopkeepers towards the moves of the Railway officials to evict a fish market and some shops adjacent to the National Highway.

The land where the fish market is located reportedly belongs to the Railway Department. It is learnt the Department had given a day’s time for the shop keepers to vacate their shops voluntarily. As the deadline had expired, officials had arrived with bull dozer and police protection for the eviction drive on Thursday.

Even local GP Chief Ramlan has expressed opposition to the move. Later though some shopkeepers agreed to vacate voluntarily many others  continuing to oppose eviction.

Bantwal police have ensured a strict vigil in the area.
