Medicinal garden with 125 plant varieties costing 54 lakhs to open today

Puttur, Sep 13, 2016: Koti and Chennayya are legendary twins and cultural folk heroes of Tulunadu. While their birth place Padumale in Puttur taluk is being developed as a heritage spot, the forest department has now set up a Rs 54 lakh medicinal garden in memory of their mother Deyi Baidethi. The garden is spread across 9.5 acres of land, beside Padumale.

Of the 9.5 acre land on a hillock, 6.75 acre has been fenced to house 125 varieties of 400 plus medicinal plants. The main objective is to spread the knowledge of medicinal plants among the local population. The park will be inaugurated by forest minister B Ramanath Rai on Today Sept 13,Tuesday.

Range forest officer, Puttur range, Mangaluru division, VP Kariappa said the garden as been demarcated into seven zones called vanas.

The Rashi Nakshatra Vana has 48 types of medicinal plants associated with 12 rashis; Navagraha Vana has nine type of medicinal plants associated with grahas; Astadikpalakara vana has plants associated with eight directions; Shiva Panchayat Vana has a medicinal plant associated with Lord Shiva namely Bilwa patra plant and Moolika vana has 15 types of roots.
