Mechanical failure led to oil leakage ; problem solved, says MRPL

Mangaluru, Nov 13, 2014: The  has clarified that only a small quantity of oil spillage  has taken place and that the spillage was not huge as complained by villagers. The clarification comes in the wake of reports that  huge oil spillage from the MRPL had led to  contamination of water sources.

 

In a communiqué, the MRPL has further clarified that  a mechanical failure had  led to the oil spillage from the refinery to a storm water drain.

An email response by Lakshmi Kumar, DGM (Corporate Communications) of MRPL also made it clear that the oil spillage was not deliberate or due to negligence. Vijay G Joshi, Director of the Refinery  also  stated that things were under control and that there was no reason for worry.

He further said so "There was oil spillage into storm water drain going out of the refinery due to a mechanical failure of a level transmitter (LT) in the oily water sewer.”

Stating that this led to a small leakage into the storm water drain, Joshi informed that  corrective measures were taken up immediately.”Oil from storm water drain was removed by deploying gully sucker.”

He said the leakage has been completely arrested and that KSPCB officials have visited the spot and collected water samples from the drain.
