In the letter, she has stated that waste continues to be dumped on the either sides of the roads, into the drains, in the rivers and in the water bodies. All waste needs to be cleared before the onset of monsoon.

Haphazard dumping of the waste will result in the clogging of stormwater drains, thereby resulting in artificial flooding during monsoon. Strict action should be initiated against the dumping of garbage on the either sides of the roads.

Meanwhile, NSS volunteers, students, police, members of Kudumbashree, labourers of MGNREGS, members of the various residents’ associations, members of various organisations, cleaned heaps of garbage that were dumped on at least 230-km stretch in Kasargod district.

An initiative taken up by the Kasargod district administration, in association with the urban local bodies and the gram panchayats, received an overwhelming response. The volunteers cleaned 76.8-km of national highway, 29-km of the Kerala State Transport Project Roads, 33-km of the state highway and 91-km of the district main roads.

The District Swacchata Mission had handed over masks, gloves and plastic bags to the volunteers to take up cleanliness drives. All the collected waste were dumped on a government land in Seethangoli, Cheemeni and Pilikod for scientific disposal.

Inaugurating the cleanliness drive, Kasargod Deputy Collector D Sajith Babu urged the people to convert wet waste at home. The dumping of waste in public places led to public nuisance, he stressed.
