Manipal gang rape case verdict out : All 5 accused convicted ; lifer for 3

Udupi, Oct 15, 2015: The judgement in the 2013 Manipal gang rape case is finally out. On October 15, Thursday, the Udupi District Sessions Court has passed its judgement  convicting the three  main accused  to life imprisonment. Two other accused who were charged with destruction of evidence, have also  been convicted and sentenced to three years of imprisonment. The judgement was pronounced by Judge Shivashanker B.

The convicts who have  been sentenced to life are Yogish Poojary, Hariprasad Poojary and Anand, while the  other two convicts are  Balachandra, brother of main accused Yogish and Harindra, brother of Hariprasad, another accused.
These three get bail to seek Apeal in a higher court.


The court  has also slapped a penalty of Rs one lakh on each of the three convicts for gang rape,   apart from Rs 5000 each  for kidnapping the victim and another Rs 5000  for threatening her life. A fine of Rs 5000 has also been slapped on the other two convicts.

The incident had taken place on the night of June 20, 2013 when the medical student of Kerala origin was returning to her residence from the University library. The trio had kidnapped the girl in an autorickshaw  and had raped her in a secluded place.
