Manipal: Construction workers stage ‘dharna’, seeking fulfillments of various demands

Manipal, June 17, 2015: The district unit of construction workers association affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged a ‘dharna’ in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office here on Wednesday, demanding the fulfillment of various demands.

Addressing the protestors, P. Vishwanath Rai, CITU leader, said that Building and Other Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act 1996 should be enforced throughout the country. The government should give representation to the CITU in the State Construction and Other Workers Welfare Board. The pension given to the beneficiaries should be increased to Rs. 3,000 per month.

The eligible age for pension for women beneficiaries should be fixed at 55 years. The Board should not use the money allocated for the welfare of the members for construction of marriage halls. The Board should provide adequate staff to its district and taluk-level offices, he said.

Ganesh Naik, Uday Uppoor, Dayananda, Godwin Fernandes, Shashikala, Nalini, Vasanti, office bearers of the association, were present.
