Mangaluru, May 20,2017: The week-long state level Halasu and Mavu Mela, an exhibition cum sale of mangoes and jackfruits was inaugurated at Kadri Park on May 19 by DK District in-charge Minister Ramanatha Rai. The event is organised by the Department of Horticulture and Agriculture and State Mango Development Board.
Speaking on the occasion, Rai said though Dakshina Kannada leads in Jackfruit production, the number of people eating this delicious fruit has reduced. He said Chikkamagalur leads in mango production in the state. He urged people to support the exhibition by visiting the venue and purchasing the fruits.
KSMDC Chairman L Gopalakrishna who also spoke, said the event aims at encouraging farmers to market their produce directly to the consumers. Regretting that carbide is used to ripen fruits including mangoes, he said purchasing fruits directly from farmers will ensure consumption of healthy fruits free from carbide.
Ivan D’Souza, MLC and Chief Whip of State Legislative Council and many others were present.
Different varieties of mangoes as well as jackfruits are on display at the event. Jackfruit happala, chips, halwa, cakes etc are also being sold.
