Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Feb 17, 2015:  According to plan, the multi stried  complex will sprout  on a seven-acres of land reserved for the purpose. The government has prepared an estimate of Rs 49 crore to construct a state-of-the-art bus terminal.  A final decision will be taken after consulting the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) as the location is adjacent to Kerala-Maharashtra national with heavy traffic paterns national highway at Mahavir (Pumpwell) Circle

B Ramanath Rai...Minister for forest, environment and ecology B Ramanath Rai, who is also the district in-charge, held a meeting to discuss the issue and directed the officials to speed up matters. Proposal to build a bus stand near Pumpwell Circle in the city has been facing hurdles for the past several years. The officials should take special interest to expedite matters. A preliminary discussion should be held with officials of NHAI. The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) must adopt a resolution so that the government will sanction the project immediately.

MCC’s proposal of constructing a multi-storey bus complex near Mahavir Circle was on paper  for more than six years. The city corporation had acquired 7.23 acres of land adjacent to National Highway at Pumpwell six years ago, but it could not go ahead with the proposal of constructing. A bus terminal near Pumpwell will ease the traffic congestion in the city, where  600 service buses at least ply every day.

Once the new bus stand is set up, the present service bus stand near State Bank of India main branch will be shifted to Pumpwell. Currently, all service buses to various destinations ply from State Bank of India main branch and this leads to traffic snarls at Karavali Circle, Bendorewell, Balmatta, Dr B R Ambedkar (Jyothi) Circle, Hampankatta and Hamilton Circle. However, all does not seem well with plans and  for several years now the State Bank area is facing neglect which is a serious cause for safety and security of public facing a negative situation.
