Mangaluru’s Flower show from Jan 23

Mangaluru, Jan 19, 2016:  District In-charge Minister Ramanath Rai will inaugurate the flower show with an aim to create awareness among the public about horticulture – including issues like methods of environment protection, improving public sanitation, landscaping cities and villages to improve aesthetic values as well as processing and value addition of all horticulture produce.  The Department of Horticulture will organise its annual flower show at Kadri Park from January 23 to 26, in association with the Siri Horticultural Society.

Horticulture Department Deputy Director Yogish H R said that a model of a character from the traditional folk art form of Yakshagana will be presented using Dutch roses, carnations and other attractive flowers.

“Flower models on musical instruments too will be a means to attract visitors to the show. There will also be a platform for people to display their flower arrangements, bonsai plants, anthuriums, orchids and other attractive plants,” he informed.  “The Department will organise a flower show to popularise terrace and kitchen gardens among city-dwellers and to encourage them to grow vegetables in the available space in and around their houses.

Terrace gardening will also promote hygienic and nutritive food habits among the consumers. There will be competitions – including flower arrangement, vegetable kitchen garden, terrace garden model and flower rangoli – for the interested. Winners will be honoured and all models selected will be kept open for public display,” he said.

Horticulture Department will also display various attractive flowers and vegetables grown by it.   Other government departments too will set up stalls to disseminate information. The stalls of nurseries, seed and fertiliser sellers as well as machine and equipment suppliers will be kept open to the public.

“Dakshina Kannada Hotel Association will conduct a food festival on the flower show premises. Cultural programmes will be held at the park on all the four days from 6 pm to 8.30 pm in connection with the Karavali Utsav. A vegetable carving competition for hotels and hotel management institutions will be held,” he said.

“The department has fixed a fee of Rs 10 for adults and Rs five for children. Schoolchildren coming in groups will be given free entry for the flower show,” he added.  He said that around 60 medicinal plants will be on display along with its names and its uses.  The Kadri Park has around 250 trees and plants and the Horticulture Department has taken measures to name all of them, he added.
