Mangaluru, August 21, 2016: It is widely sated that the foundation stone for Mangaluru city’s first skywalk will be laid on August 23. The skywalk will come up near the Mini Vidhana Soudha and will connect with the Town Hall side of this busy road.

It is learnt that the skywalk would be funded and built by KCDA, Karnataka Coastal Development Authority, for the Mangaluru City Corporation.  An official of KCDA has said that the area was crowded and urgently required a skywalk. He added that KCDA would build more skywalks in the city.

“The heavily crowded areas urgentl need skywalks. The authority will build some more of them in the city,” said Nivedith Alva, chairperson of KCDA.

Though the cost for the project was not finalized, KCDA for now would release Rs 81.2 lakh; the Mangaluru City Corporation would be required to bear 5% of the total estimated cost.

The skywalk would have escalators on both sides; however, for stepping down steps would be provided. It is said that as of now no deadline was set as the Corporation was yet to hand over land and a No-Objection Certificate for the project.

The discussion regarding the skywalk had come up during the Council meet last month and the matter was referred to the Standing Committee for Town Planning and Improvement. MLA JR Lobo had also urged authorities to build a skywalk saying several people from the railway station used the stretch to get to the buses and markets.

One section of the citizens opined that it must be ensured that it is not misused by people relaxing on the safe area of the skywalk as often seen elsewhere. Also, the habit of our area to spit indiscriminately and throw waste will need to be strictly curbed.
